The Kennel Club’s inaugural conference for Kennel Club Breed Rescue (KCBR) organisations, which was held at Stoneleigh recently, has been hailed as a success.

The Kennel Club has received much positive feedback following the event, which saw around 200 delegates spend an enjoyable and informative day at the Kennel Club Building, hearing from a wide range of speakers and having the opportunity to share their knowledge of helping pedigree dogs in need of rehoming.

Jill Holley of the Irish Setter Rescue Group said: “Excellent day. I found all the speakers very interesting. Also picked up lots of ideas”, whilst Garbo Garnham of Garbo’s GSD Rescue commented: “Thank you for a splendid opportunity to share and listen to the experts. Thank you too for so many useful ideas and advice.”

Following an opening welcome from Mike Townsend, Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust which awards many much-needed grants to breed rescue organisations each year, Kennel Club Chairman, Steve Dean outlined the work being done by KCBR and the future plans of the Kennel Club to improve the health and welfare of dogs. This was followed by a brief talk from Heidi Ancell of the Kennel Club’s External Affairs department, who advised delegates on how the Kennel Club can help KBCR organisations gain more media coverage for the work that they do.

The morning session also saw presentations on legacy marketing from Dylan Carroll, who won the Institute of Fundraising’s award for ‘Best Up-and-Coming Fundraiser last year; the work of Support Adoption for Pets, a charity supported by Pets at Home, which was given by the charity’s Amy Wilson; followed by Petlog Executive, Celia Walsom’s talk on the benefits of the Petlog microchipping and reunification database and how KCBR organisations can best make use of its services.

Following a relaxed lunch break, during which there was the opportunity to visit a variety of trade stands in attendance, delegates returned to the conference room for a question and answer session which was arranged in the absence of an appearance from former EastEnders star, Pam St Clement, who was sadly unable to attend due to illness.

The first presentation of the afternoon session was given by Laurier Nicas of Dogs Trust, who outlined the great power of social networking to dog rescue organisations and gave tips on how to improve web presence. This was then followed by arguably the star turn of the day, in the form of Trevor Cooper of Cooper and Co Solicitors for his refreshingly honest and amusing take on dog law and the legal responsibilities of KCBR organisations.

Following further refreshments, the final two speakers of the day were Mandy Jones of the Blue Cross, who explained the charity’s tailor-made rehoming programme, and Sharon Evans from Wood Green: the Animals Charity, who shared advice on the delicate skills of fundraising in animal welfare.

Finally, Mike Townsend brought the conference to a finish shortly after 4pm with some brief closing comments and the announcement of the raffle winners, with prizes having been kindly donated by the trade stands present.

Speaking after the conference, Mike Townsend said: “I am delighted with the way that this, the first KCBR Conference went, and pleased to see so many positive feedback forms as a result.

“I would like to thank the many people who came from KCBR organisations around the country for taking the time away from the great work that they do, and hope that they each left with some good ideas about how to continue to make a difference for purebred dogs in need of a home in the future.

“I would particularly like to thank the speakers for their time and effort in sharing the knowledge that they have, and for the work that they each put in to come up with such interesting and well-prepared presentations on a variety of topics.”

Copies of the presentations made at the KBCR Conference can now be downloaded from the Kennel Club website at http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/4287.

KENNEL CLUB APPLAUDS MICROCHIPPING CONSULTATION

KENNEL CLUB APPLAUDS MICROCHIPPING CONSULTATION BUT RUES MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO BETTER PROTECT PUBLIC

The Kennel Club has commended the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ (Defra) plans to consult on the introduction of compulsory microchipping which will help to crack down on the owners of dangerous dogs, but has also labelled it a missed opportunity to better protect the public by preventing dog attacks before they occur.

The Kennel Club has long lobbied for the introduction of compulsory microchipping, which brings a raft of benefits including reducing the time taken to reunite dog and owner if a dog is lost or stolen, cost savings to local authorities in the kennelling of strays, and helping to trace rogue breeders who sell puppies from puppy farms. The measure would also help to increase the traceability of irresponsible owners should a dog be out of control in a public place.

However, the Kennel Club also views Defra’s package of measures as a missed opportunity to do more to hold the irresponsible owners of dangerous dogs to account for their actions. The Kennel Club has been lobbying for the introduction of Dog Control Notices as genuine preventative action which would allow authorities to take action against irresponsible dog owners at the first signs of their dogs displaying aggression.

These pre-emptive measures would mean that ‘problem dogs’ and indeed, problem owners, can be addressed before a serious incident occurs.

The Kennel Club firmly believes this to be a more effective solution than the current legislation which ties up police resources in seizing specific breeds deemed to be dangerous regardless of the behaviour of the individual dog, rather than focusing resources on dogs of any breed that have actually displayed aggressive behaviour.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director, said: “The introduction of compulsory microchipping would be a bold move which would have far reaching benefits for dog welfare in this country. It would help the authorities to reunite dogs and owners more swiftly, to ensure that puppies sold in pet shops can be traced back to their breeder and to clearly link owners to dogs and their dog’s actions.

“However, it is not a catch all solution for protecting the public from dangerous dogs and their irresponsible owners, which can only be done by introducing measures to penalise irresponsible dog owners before an attack occurs. The time has come to stop wasting limited resources seizing innocent dogs deemed to be dangerous purely because of the way that they look and instead focus on positive solutions to tackle irresponsible dog ownership which has huge welfare implications for innocent dogs and puts the public at risk.”

The Kennel Club has welcomed some aspects of the ministerial announcement including Defra’s decision to extend the law to private property and to remove the mandatory requirement to seize and kennel all dogs suspected to be ‘of type’ under section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Whilst it welcomes local authority and community projects to promote responsible dog ownership and the government’s commitment to invest in such measures, the Kennel Club does not feel that £50,000 will make a real impact in improving the current situation. The Kennel Club’s Charitable Trust has made several grants for such schemes, with individual projects alone costing in the region of £10,000. £50,000 shared throughout the UK is therefore unlikely to give local authorities sufficient resources towards improving measures to prevent dog bite incidents and protect the public from aggressive dogs and their owners.
