An adult male dog weighing about 16 kg was presented at Polyclinic Bhuntar with the history of inability to retract penis into the preputial cavity after coitus.
The case was about four days old. Some points of setting necrosis could also be noticed on the exposed penis and prepuce. The penis was edematous and very painful. The clinical parameters of the dog were well within normal ranges. After spraying local anaesthesia on the affected site, it was cleaned and irrigated with cold water and antiseptic lotion, but could not be retracted back.
Urinary catherization was done to relieve the urine and was kept fixed for about two days along with daily antiseptic irrigation and cleaning of the penis. The parentral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy was carried out for the next five days. On third day, the swelling of the penis was quite reduced, so urinary catheter was removed and the penis was retracted back into the prepuce. Re-examination after seven days showed the animal to have an uneventful recovery.

Hi I have a 20 month bedlington who has intermittent problem with retraction. He was castrated earlier this year and I have had to return to vet on three occassions.Only on the last did this problem be given a name.I am worried as to what can happen if they operate and it doesnt work out.The longest period that it has been out is 8 hours. He has managed to urinate after a little while, but is distressed.
