Although we are a nation of animal lovers there are circumstances where, Catteries and Kennels are the only option we have to look after our animals whilst we are away.

Does the thought of leaving your adorable pet in a strange cattery / kennel leaves you fraught with tension Then the tips below and the Cozy Homes directory are for you.
Obviously one of the initial considerations is to find a cattery or kennels close to your home, this is where our Cozy Homes directory comes in handy with lots of information such as costs, contact information, map links and general information on the facility.
You can also check the local papers, community magazines,Yellow Pages, veterinary surgeries (although your vet may not give a recommendation due to their profession conduct regulations which do not allow them to endorse any particular establishment), pet shops, or place a post on our forums asking for recommendations / referrals.
With proper research and preparation your beloved pet will feel as comfortable as they do at home.
Here is a checklist of things to check out before booking your pet in, if they meet or exceed these criteria then your pet is likely to be well looked after.:-

  • Make an appointment to go and do a first hand visit, if this visit is refused then take your business elsewhere as no cattery/kennels should mind you carrying out an initial contact meeting.

  • Always go on your first impressions - everything, including the grounds as well as the cattery, should look clean and tidy.

  • Are the floor surfaces in the facility smooth and clean ?

  • Are the Animals sleeping quarters floor covered with vinyl or similar ?

  • Are the facilities smelly?

  • Do the staff make you feel welcome ?

  • Find out how knowledgeable the staff are on animal healthcare.

  • Is the Local Authority Licence displayed?

  • A well run cattery should not permit you to enter an occupied chalet or touch any of the boarders.

  • Do the animals have toys to play with ?

  • Do the Cats have a scratching post and / or a sun shelf?

  • Are the resident animals relaxed and looking comfortable ?

  • Are their food bowls and litter trays clean?

  • Is there a dedicated kitchen for the kennel/cattery that is clean and well stocked?

  • Do they have toys to play with, a scratching post and a sun shelf?

  • Can you see any diet charts in the kitchen area for any resident animals ?

  • Is there the facility for dogs and cats to be groomed?

  • Does each animal have a chalet with a large run ?

  • Can the dogs and cats have their own baskets/bedding to help them feel more at home?

  • Is there adequate security in place to prevent any attempted escapes ?

  • Are the dogs in particular walked, where and for how long ?

  • Each of the quarters should have insulation, an electric light and a heater, which should be individually controllable

  • Is there any evidence of medication requirements for currently residing animals ?
