VET HELP DIRECT Description: 1. Aim of the site: to reduce the instances of pets not receiving timely veterinary attention when required.
2. How it Works: Interactive step-by-step questions help owners to decide how quickly they need to contact their vet.
First aid advice, tailored according to the answers the owner has given, helps veterinary practices provide the best care for their clients. For example, clients will telephone before turning up at the surgery and will not feed their pet if it is likely to require a general anaesthetic.
The step by step questions and personalised nature of the answers are designed to lead to high levels of owner compliance with instructions.
3. Background to the site: The site is designed and run by two practising UK vets Susannah Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS (companion animals) and Richard Coomer MA VetMB CertES(Soft Tissue) MRCVS (equine).
We designed the site having seen animals who had been brought to the vets weeks or months too late, causing unnecessary suffering and making treatment less successful. The owners were very well intentioned but had simply not realised that veterinary attention was necessary or that 'anything could be done'.
Vet Help Direct also helps to improve Out of Hours Care. We noticed that even very knowledgeable owners often have difficulty in deciding if to call the vet out of hours, even where dedicated out of hours services exist. Owners often describe very anxious moments deciding what to do during the night.
Vet Help Direct ensures that owners of animals with urgent conditions telephone the vet urgently if necessary, rather than putting off until the morning with a misplaced sense of cost saving, or, a desire to see their usual vet.
The site also helps to prevent out of hours calls that would have resulted in telephone advice only. This helps dedicated out of hours services to run more efficiently and improves the quality of life of veterinary staff that still work 'on call' in addition to their normal working day.
4. The Website: The website is fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act and is covered by professional indemnity.
