The Home of Rest for Horses near Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire is dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of horses, ponies and donkeys throughout the United Kingdom, providing a sanctuary for retired working animals, an educational programme and funding for ethical, non-invasive research to reduce disease and suffering.
Founded in 1886 by Miss Ann Lindo for overworked London cab horses, The Home of Rest for Horses is the oldest horse charity in the United Kingdom. It currently cares for over 100 retired working horses, ponies and donkeys in their declining years.

were amongst the most famous residents of The Home. These old soldiers have all sadly died, but there are currently 11 retired military horses at The Home. Amongst this impressive contingent are Janus, Leonidas and Peninsula - drum horses from the Household Cavalry - Marillion and Linnett from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, and Twilight and Iceland, two Windsor Greys who pulled the Golden Coach at the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Parade.
In addition to providing this care, The Home has a valuable educational role, welcoming 40,000 visitors each year and promoting the virtues of responsible horse ownership through the principles of commitment, care and cost. British Olympic eventer, Pippa Funnell, will be lending her support to this programme in 2005, helping to educate horse owners in the management of conditions and diseases that can affect even the most well cared for animals.
The Home is the United Kingdom’s largest provider of funds for research into equine welfare. Current grants and scholarships have provided funding for the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Bristol and Liverpool, as well as for the Royal Veterinary College and the Animal Health Trust. These have facilitated research programmes into conditions and diseases such as colic, laminitis, grass sickness and strangles. The Home also provides grants for the building and equipping of equine hospitals throughout the country.
The Princess Royal is patron of The Home of Rest for Horses - a great honour, since Her Royal Highness has an excellent understanding of the value The Home’s contribution to equine welfare, education and scientific research.
Chief Executive of The Home is Brigadier Paul Jepson, formerly Director of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and the Queen’s Honorary Veterinary Surgeon. The Brigadier has recently been installed as Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers.
A self-funding charity, The Home of Rest for Horses relies entirely on donations and legacies receiving no financial support from the Government at all.
