Is dedicated to the protection and welfare of working animals in some of the poorest places in the world – animals which are critical for the survival of the people in these countries.
The charity is represented in Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Syria, Algeria, Mali, Ethiopia and Mauritania. It works with governments, voluntary organisations and local people in these countries, where people depend heavily on working animals for their livelihood. The charity has a total of 18 veterinary centres and 20 mobile clinics which treat over 300,000 sick and injured animals in areas where veterinary care is not available. This number includes donkeys, horses, camels, cattle, cats and dogs.
Three emergency projects have been added to SPANA’s portfolio – in Kosovo, Iraq and the Sudan - and within the past six months, Chief Executive, Jeremy Hulme, has visited two of the world’s most serious trouble spots – Iraq and the Sudan.

In Iraq SPANA is providing aid which is vital to the rehabilitation of the country’s agricultural base and essential to its future prosperity and long-term development. At the request of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, SPANA has, since May 2003, been proactively staging emergency supply runs into Iraq from its permanent facilities in Jordan and Syria.
The charity is working towards the reconstruction of the Iraqi Veterinary Service, employing and stocking Iraqi vets with supplies and assisting with the redevelopment of Iraqi veterinary training facilities, such as Baghdad’s Vet School. A free clinical service has been established at the Faculty which is staffed by trainee vets to provide care for Baghdad’s mainly equine working animal population and also for farm animals in outlying regions.
In the Sudan, SPANA is spearheading an emergency programme to save what remains of the dwindling number of working animals in North Darfur and without which the people in the refugee camps are refusing to return to their homes. These animals, mainly donkeys, are necessary to carry water and firewood and to help plough the fields. They are truck and taxi to the families who own them, but they’re being allowed to die of starvation and disease, or are being stolen.
SPANA is one of the major partners and donors of the charity Kids for Kids in the Sudan and is providing funding and veterinary care to support the promotion of animal welfare as part of Kids for Kids’ existing animal loan scheme in that country. In the longer term, SPANA aims to emulate one of its most successful projects, established in its operation in Timbuktou, which involves the training of tribesmen as community animal health workers - otherwise known as ‘bare-foot veterinarians’.
SPANA also supports outreach programmes in Gambia, India, South Africa, Kenya, Mongolia, Peru and Zimbabwe. The charity relies solely on donations and legacies and receives no state funding at all.
