Everyone is talking about the bill to ban foxhunting.
What does the ban mean exactly and what are every ones views on the matter?
Well, the bill is intended to ‘Make Provision about hunting wild mammals with dogs. To prohibit hare coursing; and connected purposes purposes.’
In other words:
• A person commits offence if he hunts a wild mammal with a dog unless his hunting is registered or exempt.
• A person is committing an offence by supplying land or dogs to be used for hunting. Anyone assisting in a hare coursing event shall be committing an offence.
• A person can apply to register for permission to hunt provided that the act will prevent serious damage or destruction to other animals such as livestock, game birds, crops, growing timber and fisheries.
There are different view points and the subject raises passionate responses.
Some say fox hunting is abhorrent and cruel. Foxes control their own population according to the food available. They don't need the interference of humans. It is unpleasant to imagine 40 dogs and 40 riders chasing a sweet fox until it’s exhausted and then watching the dogs rip it apart just for the fun of it.
This behavior anachronism. The humane alternative is Drag hunting. With Drag hunting those employed could maintain the hunt, keep their jobs and their horses and dogs so that their macabre hobby could continue without animal cruelty. How can people gain enjoyment from tormenting animals?
The other side of the argument is that banning fox hunting would have immense effects on the rural community, ecology, habitat, British horse sports, and even to the fox population.
Without controlled culling, the majority of the fox population would be killed, probably less humanely by poisoning, snaring or shooting. Also many small woodlands, hedgerows, and other places are maintained by landowners in order to allow a controlled fox population to survive. Many people would loose their jobs. Horses and dogs used for the hunt would have to be destroyed. Foxes are vermin and cause a lot of damage to livestock and crops.
Many famous celebrities are demanding that Tony Blair keeps his promise to ban hunting with dogs here are some of them:
Sir Paul McCartney, Dermot O’Leary, Mel C, Louise Redknapp, Richard Wilson, Billy Bragg and Jo Brand.
