SLUG BAIT POISONING.
Posted on Tuesday, August 24 @ 21:10:00 BST by jenvetadmin

First Aid jenvetnurse writes "How many keen gardeners put down slug bait without a thought for pets?
It is incredibly dangerous if eaten by dogs and cats often fatal.
Sometimes the slugs affected are eaten by puppies and it is still very toxic.
The bait is bran based to dogs and sometimes cats find this quite palatable. Click read more now...

The dangerous ingredient is Meetaldehyde. It kills slugs/snails and rats. It takes just 2oz of bait to kill a collie sized dog (20kgs) The Metaldehyde enters the brain and the poor affected animals show nervous signs such as muscle tremors, ataxia, hyperaesthesia, nystagmus etc. They usually have a fever as a result and acidosis can occur.

Animals can die within 4 – 24 hours and some may end up with liver failure.
The emergency treatment given includes sedation, washing out the stomach, intra-venous fluid therapy and cooling the patient.

Slug bait is responsible for a lot of unnecessary suffering and not many people are aware of it surprisingly. Are your animals safe? Check if your neighbours use slug bait especially if they are keen gardeners to be sure. Slug bait is also responsible for deaths of many hedgehogs and other wildlife. There is slug bait available which is non-toxic. Products such as this
