I have seen a few cases recently -
The Adder is the only venomous snake found in Britain. Adders are found in dry, open country from late February until mid October (the rest of the time they hibernate). An adder is easily recognised by the dark zigzag stripe down its back.
Adder bites are occur during the summer only when the snake is provoked. For example a curious dog. Not all bites result in envenomation and bites can cause a lot of discomfort and medical problems, death is very apparently rare.
If your animal recieves a bite take it to your vet immmediately who will treat symptomatically.
The bite should NOT be touched at all.
Bee and wasp stings are also common this time of year.
The advice generally is to remove the sting if you find it and bathe the area with a cold compress.
Observe the animal closely - any signs of respiratory distress - take your pet straight to your vet.
Bites around the face/mouth are most dangerous due to the swelling. Contact you vet if you are unsure at all but generally stings only result in itchy/swollen areas although some animals can be allergic to the stings and it can be fatal.
