Tracker Dog Disease is a tick borne Rickettsial infection caused by Ehrlichia spp. that affects canines as well as canids.
It is also known by several other names like Canine hemorrhagic fever, Tropical canine pancytopenia, Canine typhus etc. The tick vectors associated with it are brown dog tick (Rhipicepahalus sanguineus) and lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum.) It can manifest its symptoms as acute, sub-clinical or chronic form.
The clinical signs associated with the disease may be anemia, fever, bleeding disorders, petechiae, depression, loss of appetite, dyspnoea, lymphadenopathy, arthritis, ophthalmic and neurological symptoms. German shepherd dogs are considered more susceptible to this disease.
The disease diagnosis depends upon the clinical signs, serology and blood smear examination. There is decrease in the number of platelets in the blood. For treatment of such cases Doxycycline or Tetracycline is generally given for at least six weeks along with the supportive therapy. Cases showing severe anemia may also require blood transfusion. To prevent the disease, tick control is necessary. The areas where this disease is endemic, the dogs may be kept on Tetracycline or Doxycycline in low doses during the tick season for prevention.
Ehrlichiosis may also be transmitted to man but through bite of infected ticks.
