Paraphimosis in Dogs

Paraphimosis is the condition when there is difficulty and inability in retraction of penis into the preputial cavity. I have chosen to write a quick overview on it because it should always be considered an emergency and immediate medical care is imprtant to avoid any further complications.
There can be multiple causes which may be stenosis of prepucial orifice, balanoprosthitis, trauma, foreign bodies in prepuce, fracture of penis etc. and in many cases paraphimosis occurs after coitus because the hair present on preputial orifice or inversion of prepuce form a constrictive ring on the penis.
If not treated immediately, further complications like infection, necrosis of penis may be there and in severe cases, even gangrene may set up. Some animals also show dysuria.
Treatment depends upon the aetiology and severity. The local application of lubricants, cold packs, anti-inflammatory agents and hypertonic solutions like of dextrose are helpful in the early stages. Some may require antibiotics and minor surgical correction, those with dysuria may also need to be catheterized (urinary) while in cases where gangrene has set up-----amputation of penis and prepuce may be necessary along with castration.
!!!!!!!!--- The conditions like priapism, congenitaly abnormal prepuce or os penis, paralysis of retractor penis muscle, neoplasia are also the important things to be kept in mind while dealing with such cases---!!!!!!!
