Misuse of emergency cover.
Posted on Saturday, June 16 @ 08:26:21 BST by jenvetadmin

iv Do you find your emergency cover is often mis-used by your clients?
I have taken calls at 4am where owners wish to cancel appointments, tell me all about their cat with hairballs, I had a call once because someone had seen a badger in their garden at 5am!
Most people do not have a clue about what is an emergency and what is a blatent waste of our time.
What calls have you had out of hours that have made your blood boil? Is the answer to this problem to simply train and educate our clients? What is your opinion on emergency clinics taking your out of hours work for you? Do you believe this works well?
I have worked in an emergency clinic - I believe the patients do have better care and attention. Although I do not agree with moving them back to their own clinics first thing in the morning when they are very ill. I also think it is bad for clients who are distressed and have to travel to an unfamiliar surgery at a time when they most rely on their vet. There are pros and cons. It would be great to hear other opinions on this.
