painandrelief writes "One day a black Labrador pup of about 5 months age came to my clinic with some symptoms like Canine Distemper but after thorough examination and investigation it turned out to be something else.
The case was referred from a nearby Veterinary Hospital with these symptoms:
Loss of appetite, dysentery with some blood and lots of mucus, chorea, painful back muscles. The disease was very insidious.
Fresh faeces were examined under the microscope, lots and lots of larvae were observed.
The diagnosis was made of Strongyloides spp.
Although not common, the infection with Strongyloides stercoralis should also be kept in mind while treating puppies of 4-5 months age. These cases may respond to Ivermectin, Albendazole, Fenbendazole etc. although the prognosis is not very good in many cases.
