Pulse Oximeters – Friend or Foe?
Posted on Saturday, May 12 @ 20:09:40 BST by jenvetadmin

2 Cats Computer We are more commonly seeing electronic monitoring devices in use in practice these days. What are everyone’s views on them?
ECG monitors, Pulse Oximeters, heart rate monitors etc are creeping into theatres everwhere. These gadgets can provide immediate results that can alert us to a problem and save lives and reduce risks.
We know there is a problem sometimes a little to late. Early warning that O2 saturation levels are dipping /CO2 levels are rising cannot be humanly detected until there are obvious clinical signs displayed by the animal.
However some ague that concentrating on equipment detracts our attention away from the patient and that we become too reliant on the machines to alert us in the case of an emergency. Are these gadgets an invaluable tool or do they lull us into a false sense of security.
How accurate are they in fact? Discuss your views and experiences in the forums with other vets and nurses right now.
