painandrelief writes " An adult dog weighing about 10 kg was presented at the Veterinary Polyclinic Bhuntar (Mohal) with the history of a swelling in the perineum, reduced apetite and difficult urination since 3 days.
Upon careful examination the swelling was confirmed as PERINEAL HERNIA containing urinary bladder in the hernial sac. The parameters like body temperature, respiration and heart rate were noticed to be well within normal ranges. Routine haematology also showed almost normal values.
The urinary bladder was evacuated in the first step by direct cystocentesis through an 18-G disposable needle. After that, antibitotic and anti-inflammatory therapy was begun. Surgical operation for the correction of perineal hernia was fixed for the next day and the owner was directed to keep the animal fasted.
Next day the surgey was performed under short-acting general anaesthesia and urinary bladder was replaced back into the original position. (Internal obturator muscle flap technique was used). The animal urinated normally 30 minutes after completion of surgery. The antibiotic and anti-inflammatories were continued for five more days and daily antiseptic dressing of the surgical site was also done. Castration was not performed.
The animal showed uneventful recovery when it was presented for re-examination at the polyclinic after 10 days post surgey.
