Sometimes the dogs are presented with the problem of severe itching and when we examine the affected parts carefully we may find some very tiny orange or light red coloured spots.
These spots should be scraped as skin scrappings and must be examined under microscope. In many cases they come out be "CHIGGERS".
Chiggers are the harvset mites belonging to different species. Their nymphs and adults are non-pathogenic and mostly found on leaf litter but larvae cause dermatitis in dogs, cats, human beings etc.
The animal affected with Chigger dermatitis should be treated with ectoparasiticidals. Antiseptic cream can also be applied on the lesions to hasten recovery. To prevent severe itching, antiallergics may also be used."
