It is a Linguatulid (parasites that share characteristics of arthropods and annelids) parasite of dog and may also be found in herbivores like cattle, sheep, goat, horses etc. It also affects human beings.
The adult worms are about 13 cm long and are found in nasal passages, pharynx, larynx and oesophagus. These may reach inside the ear via Eustachain tube.
The definitive host gets infected either by ingestion of nymph infected tissues or by inhalation of nymphs --while the infection of intermediate host occurs by ingestion of materials contaminated with sneezed or coughed out discharges of the definitive host containing eggs laid by adult females.
Symptoms in definitive host are of respiratory irritation, sneezing, coughing, mucous and blood mixed nasal discharge, rhinitis, pharyngitis, dyspnoea atc.--- while intermediate host shows the different symptoms according to the route of the migration of larvae like those liver and kidney damage, peritonitis, pneumonia etc. (These organ may have nodules containing larvae that may rupture releasing the larvae).
