The training to become a VN takes time, motivation and hard work. Once you have qualified, you will have a varied career which is different everyday.
Did you know there are approximately 5,000 qualified vns in Britain?
Other than working in a veterinary practice some work for animal charities, work in educational or research institutes, or become practice managers or reps.
The British Veterinary Nursing Association is a very good organization which advises people how to become a vn, employment rights and so on. Visit their website http://www.vetweb.co.uk/sites/bvna1.htm
If you really want to become a Veterinary Nurse the requirements are:
5 GCSE's at grade C or above. If you do not have these qualifications you can do the Animal Nursing Assistants Course which will lead onto the vn training course.
17 years minimum.
Must have worked for at least 2 years at a vets which is an approved training centre.
An average day for a VN (although everyday is by no means average):
Caring for the in-patients at the start of the day. Feeding, exercising, medicating and re-assessing their health.
Admitting animals, injecting the pre-meds, restraining animals, monitoring anesthesia helping the vets to get through the days operating list as smoothly as possible.
Clearing up after the ops. And caring for the recovering animals. Sterilizing the instruments then discharging the animals.
There is usually some reception work and dealing with the clients.
A potential vn must love animals and you must be able to deal with smells and be prepared to be on your feet all day and work long hours. You may get bitten or scratched. You also must have some people skills as you work closely with the clients.
