RED-RED CHERRY IN THE DOG's EYE
Posted on Sunday, March 18 @ 15:29:08 GMT by jenvetadmin

surgical painandrelief writes "Whenever I see a dog coming to me a with a little red ball in the corner of the eye, it mostly happens to be case of the prolapse of the gland of third eyelid i.e. nictitans gland. The function of this gland is tear production and it's prolapse may result in it's irritation, inflammation, infection etc. and ofcourse the disturbance in tear production. Some breeds of dogs such as St. Bernard, Bulldog, Lhasa Epso etc. seem to be more susceptible to this condition. When this condition develops in one eye, it is likely that it may develop in other eye too.
The condition is commonly known as "CHERRY EYE". The condition may complicate further due to rubbing of eye on the surfaces by the animal. The condition now a days is corrected by repositioning of the gland but in older days, the excision of the gland was being carried out. It is considered that excision of the gland may cause "DRY EYE" i.e. keratoconjunctivitis sicca in the animals later in life in which this gland has been excised.

!!! Differential diagnosis with tumours of eye is important while dealing with such cases !!!"
