Atresia Ani - A Case Report
Posted on Monday, March 05 @ 14:30:23 GMT by jenvetadmin

Cow ATRESIA ANI: - A CASE REPORT A male calf aged 3 days was presented at Veterinary Polyclinic Bhuntar (Mohal) with the history of absence of anal opening. The routine clinical parameters of the calf were well within normal ranges except for the respiration, which was laboured. The calf was feeding and urinating normally. It was exhibiting extreme discomfort and was apparently trying to pass the faeces but was unable to do so because of the absence of anal opening. The condition was diagnosed as ATRESIA ANI. It was decided to perform the surgery immediately to make the opening and relieve the muconium. The surgery was performed under epidural anaesthesia with Lignocaine HCl 2%. As soon as the opening was made, a plug of mucus followed by about 2 litres of liquid splashed out forcefully. After cleaning of the site and passed out muconium, the sutures were applied to make and maintain the shape of anal opening. The calf started defaecating normally, immediately after the surgery. A course of antibiotics, daily antiseptic dressing for one week and analgesic for next three days will be given to the animal in the post-operative care. Working Vets: Dr. Shakuntla, Dr. Rajender Paul, Dr. Sanjeev Kumari Paul, Dr. Ram Lal Thakur, Veterinary Polyclinic Bhuntar at Mohal, Distt. Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, India. Acknowledgement: The vets are thankful to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Himachal Pradesh, India for providing the necessary facilities.
