Can locums be self employed?
Posted on Sunday, February 18 @ 20:29:35 GMT by jenvetadmin

Vet News Well this is a good question. It is all a bit vague as far as I can tell. Many VN's and vets work as SE or as a Limited company but there seems to be a general lack of understanding whether it is legal or not.
The term ‘locum’ has no legal significance. The amount of time worked as a locum has no relevance - some work at the same practice for years on a locum basis.
With self-employment the practice has a responsibility to ensure tax is paid. With limited companies the nurse is responsible.
With being SE you must consider these points: The tools and equipment required/The financial risks/Professional Indemnity and the Benefits employees recieve that SE do not ie pensions/perks.
Who is the vulnerable party? Is it the locum or the practice? A written contract would be adviseable in all locum agreements. Get legal advise before you start to set you in good stead.
Rig Vet Recruitment is another alternative. They remove all the hassles with locuming. The payment to you is from Rig - you do not invoice the practice - they do it for you. It is a different and easy approach. For ore info visit rigvets.co.uk
