International Species Information System is a non-profit organization that maintains computer based information systems which are used by the zoological community in many countries of the world. ISIS’s vision is to deliver and support world’s most current, comprehensive and reliable source of information on animals and their environments for zoos, aquariums and related organizations to serve institutional, regional and global animal management and conservation goals. It is the mission of ISIS to facilitate international collaboration in the collection and sharing of information on animals and their environments for zoos, aquariums and related organizations. It is so unique and wonderful; there is no other central database in the world that contains information on 2 million animals present in zoological institutions and also some in wild. The recent project under development is ZIMS: Zoological Information Management system that will be the essential and indispensable software of tomorrow in the field of wildlife. To prepare this software which will replace the current ISIS software applications to provide a more accurate and comprehensive database, ISIS is working with more than 500 experts of zoological community from all over the world. In this process, IADISC (International Animal Data Information Systems Committee) is serving as a global forum for the user community’s involvement necessary to move forward with the planning, design, development and deployment of the new ZIMS.
ZIMS will be more user-friendly, integrated, secure, historical data preserver, institutionally as well as globally suitable, easy to handle software of twenty first century and so will play a vital role in the conservation of wildlife. and what not!!!! The data will be more than the text and will be more accurate too. And there is much more interesting information related to ISIS, ZIMS and IADISC on their websites. If you want to take a dip into the wonderful packet of information, just log on to www.isis.org and www.iadisc.org .
