As a clinician what I think????-----
Whenever any dog owner comes to me with the complaint that his dog or bitch is leaving spots of blood here and there from their genetilia--- The first thing that I check out for is transmissible venereal tumour and in majority of the cases it is so. Very few times, it happened to be a proestrus bitch of unaware owners. These fragile, lobulated cauliflower like reddish lumps of tumour that bleed easily are mostly seen on the penis and prepuce in males and on vulva and vagina in females i.e. mucosa of external genetilia however in some cases they may also be present on other organs e.g. nose, mouth, conjuctiva etc. It is mostly transmitted by contact through coitus however some people consider that it may also spread by licking etc. The cases which are presented late, especially bitches may show external genetilia in a much spoiled and destructed form, some even may have difficult urination. Although there are studies that suggest that these regress spontaneously also, but considering the troublesome symptoms and progress of the disease, practically the treatment is begun atonce whenever the patient is presented for investigation and treatment. Diagnosis can be made by clinical observation, cytology and biopsy etc.
In my personal opinion and observation the best results are obtained after treatment with Vincrystine sulphate.
!!!!! Differential diagnosis with injuries or other kinds of masses/growths of the genetilia, hematuria etc. should be kept in mind during investigation and treatment!!!!!!"
