How the vets of a Polyclinic tackled stray cows of their area?
Posted on Tuesday, January 16 @ 18:50:59 GMT by jenvetadmin

Vet News painandrelief writes "This is a tale of a small Veterinary Polyclinic situated in a Hilly state of India. In this area there is problem of stray cows and people usually leave their cows stray on the roads when they do not conceive easily, the reason being that when they don't calve, they don't give milk hence they go uneconomical for their owners. (In India, slaughter of cow is not done and is illegal too). These stray cows roaming on roads again pose other problems too. So the vets of this small Veterinary Polyclinic Bhuntar(MOHAL) motivated the farmers to adopt these stray cows and made them lactating within 15 days by induction of artificial lactation in them. They instructed the adopters to discard the milk of these cows for 30 days and then start using it.

And the result was that many of the poor farmers got a lactating cow for no cost.

Then a pleasent surprise came to the vets after some months of starting this campaign----. A good number of cows who were anatomically normal, started conceiving after this treatment. Reason perhaps was priming of the reproductive tract of cows and also the improved nutrition of the productive cows. And also farmers started bringing their cows to the clinic for regular check-ups.

Now there are many cows in the area adopted who were once stray but now having caring owners and are now calving and concieving normally. Some of them have even calved twice or even more after they first of all visited this clinic.

"Where there is a will, there is a way!
