As you probably are aware Epilepsy is a very commonly seen in practice. The condition is very distressing for the owners and can be difficult to manage in some cases.

Epilepsy is a symptom of some underlying neurological problem occurring within the brain. Metabolic or electrolye imbalances or toxic substances circulating cause chaotic firing of the neurons in the cerebrum. When this happens the fits/seizures present from a mild body tremor to a full fit.
Epilepsy is secondary to certain other disorders within the body such as organ failure, diabetes, brain tumour etc. True Epilepsy though is a hereditary condition rife amongst certain canine breedlines.

Epilepsy is seen more in certain breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Irish Setters, Poodles, Beagles and German Shepherd Dogs.

Treatment generally is Phenobarbitone, Bromide, Primidone although herbal treatments are used with success alongside conventional treatment – Scullcap and Valerian are used with much success.

Discuss your cases/experiences with other vets/nurses in the forums right now.
